Delicious in Dungeon Recipe Log
So this is my project/love letter to Delicious in Dungeon. This is a show/comic that I really like. The art and the characters and the world and the story and the message all come together to make something that's stuck with me since I finished it. I think it makes an argument that you can truly appreciate things when you put an earnest effort into it. Cooking and baking and food are a big hobby of mine, but I feel like I haven't really done much with it since my life got a bit busier and it became less necessary for me to cook for myself as much. So this is an effort to turn that around.
So my idea for how this is going to work is as follows:
- First I'm going to list out every recipe from the anime/manga and an outline of what I'm going to actually do for the recipe
- that means taking the list of ingredients and translating them into real life ones and then the steps I'll be doing to make the recipe
- Then I'll try to follow that recipe and record what I do
- so I'll say what I did or didn't do (aka how closely I followed my own steps) and take pictures and stuff of the process and the result
- and then tada! I've done something I can be proud of and documented it for all time*
- *or at least as long as this site lives on the internet
Dish #1: Huge Scorpion and Walking Mushroom Hotpot
This dish showed up in Chapter 1 of the manga and Episode 1 of the anime. Made of a huge scorpion and walking mushroom and supplemented with seaweed, invertatoes, and dried slime from Senshi's supplies.
I think the irl equivalents would be some shellfish, different types of mushroom, seaweed, potatoes, and some konnyaku noodles. To be honest, several recipes have been made in a collab with the manga and several restaurants in the Shibuya area. They already interpreted these recipes and I've seen them so I'll be taking inspiration/copying them from time to time.
You'll need:
- clams or oysters
- shiitake and oyster mushrooms
- seaweed
- golden potatoes
- konnyaku noods
- stuff for hot pot broth, kombu and dashi and etc
My recipe of irl Huge Scorpion and Walking Mushroom Hotpot is:
- prepare the mushrooms and mushrooms
- make the broth and bring to a simmer
- start simmering potatoes and mushrooms and then add the noods (and seaweed?)
- add in shellfish
- enjoy
Dish #2: Man-Eating PLant Tart
This dish showed up in Chapter 2 of the manga and Episode 1 of the anime. Made of several man-eating plants, slime jelly, and leftover scorpion hotpot broth.
I think the irl equivalents would be some bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, and pearl onions. Unfortunately it sounds like it also has broth set with gelatin which is usually done with just egg. On top of that the crusst is some inedible plant skin instead of a pastry crust, so it would be like corn husk?
You'll need:
- peppers
- cherry tomatoes
- pearl onions
- (leftover) hot pot broth
- gelatin
- tamale husks
My recipe of irl Man-Eating PLant Tart is:
- cut the veggies
- cook the peppers and onions
- make the broth jello
- line a quiche dish with the husks
- fill the dish with the jello and the veggies and season
- wait for the quiche to set
- enjoy
Dish #3: Roast Basilisk
This dish showed up in Chapter 3 of the manga and Episode 2 of the anime. Made of a basilisk and mana herbs.
I think the irl equivalents would be a chicken and herbs that have healing properties. That includes garlic, ginger, turmeric, mint, lemon balm, basil, catnip, parsley, rosemary, thyme, oregano, etc. I looked up herbs with healing properties online, and it seems like almost anything edible has at some point been said to be healing so I guess I'll go with what tastes the best. Or I might muster up the courage to ask a plant gay friend what they think. Also the manga shows a whole roast chicken, but I'm feeding at most 2 usually so I'm probably gonna do chicken cuts or a smaller bird.
You'll need:
- chicken
- collection of herbs
My recipe of irl Man-Eating PLant Tart is:
- prep the herbs
- season the chicken
- roast chicken
- enjoy
Dish #4: Mandrake and Basilisk Omelet
This dish showed up in Chapter 4 of the manga and Episode 2 of the anime. Made of mandrake, basilisk bacon and egg.
I think the irl equivalents would be parsnips, eggs, and bacon. The manga shows the mandrake and bacon inside of the omelet, but I think it makes more sense to put it over them like they're the bed of rice. I'll try to put it inside but if it doesn't work, I'm using a bed as plan B.
You'll need:
- parsnips
- eggs
- bacon
My recipe of irl Mandrake and Basilisk Omelet is:
- prepare the parsnips and bacon
- cook the parsnips and bacon to taste, seasoning well
- whisk eggs
- cook the eggs Japanese omelette style
- serve egg over bed of parsnips and bacon
- enjoy
Dish #5: Mandrake Kakiage & Giant Bat Tempura
This dish showed up in Chapter 6 of the manga and Episode 2 of the anime. Made of mandrake, big bat meat, basilisk egg, flour, soy sauce, sake, amd seasoning.
I think the irl equivalents would be parsnips, chicken, egg, and real life versions of everything for tempura
You'll need:
- parsnips
- medicinal herbs (perilla)
- chicken breast
- egg
- tempura flour/panko
- soy sauce, sake
- seasoning
My recipe of irl Mandrake Kakiage & Giant Bat Tempura is:
- cut the veggies and prep the chicken
- mix together tempura batter and coatings
- one at a time, coat about a 1/4 cup of parsnips in batter and add to fry oil
- or baste and bread the chicken and add it
- fry until done
- rest tempura on paper towels
- enjoy
Dish #6: Living Armor Full Course Meal
This dish showed up in Chapter 7 of the manga and Episode 3 of the anime. Made of living armor, medicinal herbs, and basilisk egg.
I think the irl equivalents would be mussels, herbs, and egg.
You'll need:
- mussels
- medicinal herbs (parsnips/perilla/etc)
- egg
- soy sauce, sake
- seasoning
My recipe of irl Living Armor Full Course Meal is:
- shuck the mussels
- cook the herbs and veggies
- cook the mussels per the different recipes (stir fry, steaming, grilling/frying)
- or cook the veggies and add the mussel and egg to the soup
- put together the stir fry, steamed and grilled mussels, and season
- enjoy
